How to maintain laminate flooring correctly?

Maintaining laminate flooring is relatively easy if you follow proper cleaning and care techniques. Here’s a step-by-step guide to keep your laminate floors looking great:

1. Daily Cleaning

Sweep or Vacuum Regularly – Use a soft-bristle broom, microfiber dust mop, or a vacuum with a hard floor setting to remove dirt and debris.

Avoid Beater Brushes – If using a vacuum, ensure it doesn’t have a rotating beater bar, which can scratch the surface.

2. Weekly/Monthly Mopping

Use a Damp (Not Wet) Mop– Excess water can warp laminate flooring. Use a well-wrung microfiber mop with a laminate-friendly cleaner.

Avoid Harsh Cleaners – Never use vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners. Instead, use a pH-neutral laminate floor cleaner.

Dry Immediately – Wipe up any excess moisture to prevent damage.

3. Preventative Care

Use Doormats – Place mats at entryways to reduce dirt and grit that can scratch the floor.

Felt Pads on Furniture – Attach felt pads to chair and table legs to prevent scratches.

Avoid High Heels & Pet Nails – Keep pet nails trimmed and avoid walking in stilettos, which can dent the floor.

Protect from Sunlight – Use curtains or blinds to prevent UV fading over time.

4. Spills & Stains

Clean Immediately – Wipe spills with a slightly damp cloth and dry the area.

Stubborn Stains – Use a mild soap solution or specialized laminate cleaner for sticky residues (like gum or wax). Gently scrape with a plastic scraper if needed.

5. Avoid Excessive Moisture

No Steam Mops – The heat and moisture can seep into seams and cause swelling.

Wipe Wet Shoes & Pet Paws – Prevent water damage by keeping the floor as dry as possible.

6. Repairing Minor Damage

Scratches – Use a laminate floor repair kit or a matching wax pencil.

Dents & Chips – For deeper damage, consider replacing individual planks if possible.

7. Long-Term Maintenance

Rotate Rugs & Furniture – Prevent uneven wear by occasionally moving area rugs and heavy furniture.

Reapply Protective Coatings (if applicable) – Some laminates can benefit from a laminate polish (check manufacturer guidelines).

What NOT to Do:

Don’t use wax or polish unless specified by the manufacturer.

Avoid abrasive scrubbers (steel wool, stiff brushes).

Never soak the floor with water.

By following these steps, your laminate flooring will stay clean, scratch-free, and in good condition for years. Always refer to your flooring manufacturer’s care instructions for specific recommendations.
